Hot Toppings For Your ‘Dogs

The United Hot Dogs of America

Hot dogs are criminally underrated. Especially when it comes to versatility. Sure, the New Yorker classic is undeniably tasty – paired with grilled onions and lashings of ketchup and Funnybones’ Coney Island hot dog mustard for that authentic taste. But there are another 49 states to take flavour and topping inspiration from to reinvent this American icon.

49 might be a tad too many to go through in this blog, so we’ve stuck to our favourites:

Illinois – Specifically, Chicago-style. Sometimes described as the hot dog capital of the US, operators can earn the name with Funnybones’ Chicago Meatpacker extra-large hot dogs. Stick to the true Chicago trimmings with freshly sliced tomatoes, short pepper, a dill pickle spear, chopped raw onions, green relish, yellow mustard, and a sprinkle of celery salt – but hold the ketchup!

Connecticut – You may have guessed that at least one of the states would have a quirky seafood topping, and sitting right on the coast, it makes sense that it’s Connecticut! This ‘dawg is dusted with parmesan and topped with clams then broiled until the shellfish is cooked. Finish with sliced garlic and a generous sprinkle of oregano. Likewise Maine features lobster, and Maryland includes crab!

Florida – Bring the sunshine state to your plate with a topping of spicy mango salsa to make your taste buds tingle.

Washington – Originating in Seattle, Washington’s typical hot dog is split in half and grilled, then stuffed with cream cheese and topped with grilled onions. Sriracha sauce is optional for those that like it hot.

Texas – These cowboys love to load their hot dogs with chilli, cheese, and jalapenos for a hearty and spicy snack, made famous in Houston.

California – Totally tubular Californian hot dogs are often wrapped in bacon, then grilled with onions and peppers. For the even more fashionable option, substitute the onion and peppers with freshly sliced avocado.

Hawaiian – Pineapple on pizza fans, avert your eyes! If you don’t like that, you certainly aren’t going to like the idea of sliced spam and chopped pineapple chunks adoring this hot dog bun.

New Hampshire – Thanks to a history with nearby French Canadian neighbours, Hampsherites top their hot dogs with a generous portion of poutine; a classic mix of chips, gravy, and cheese curds. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!

Vermont – Pickle lovers rejoice! Vermont calls for a lengthways-sliced pickle to keep your hot dog company, and then the pair are doused in maple syrup. The sweet and salty combo speaks for itself.

Wyoming – This state likes to keep it simple, with Buffalo Wing Sauce being the topping of choice. This is perhaps the easiest to recreate, and if you have some of Funnybones’ buffalo sauce for chicken wings anyway, why not test it out yourself?

Indiana – A bit of an odd one out, Indiana is known for its corn, so what better option than Funnybones’ corn dogs? Hot dogs wrapped in crispy sweet corn batter and served on a stick; corndogs are ideal festival food thanks to being easy to enjoy on the go.
